FORUM
WHAT IS A FORUM ?
A forum is a situation where people may discuss an issue or topic of public interest. To put it another way, a forum is a place, situation, or community where people come together to share ideas and discuss issues, especially important public ones. Within a single conversation, a forum typically includes several discussion topics. It normally begins with a broad question to which you and other students can add comments.
ROLES OF CHAIRMAN
Sets the tone for the entire Forum by overseeing the overall sessions and material, which is focused on the abstract. During the discussion, the chair has a variety of duties, including greeting and thanking forum members and guests for their participation and contributions, presenting the agenda items and the key discussion topics, setting, approving and reminding people of ground rules as required, and the last one is summing up the discussion and agreeing on courses of action. ROLES OF PANEL MEMBERS The panel, usually 3-4 professionals in the field, shares facts, provides opinions and answers questions to the audience either through questions curated by the chairman or taken directly from the audience. The role of the panel members is preparing the forum before the beginning by reading the topic and discussing it in advance and preparing the respective outlines with panelists. Therefore, the panelist must always keep an eye contact at the panel members or the audience during the ongoing forum. Next, respond by providing counterarguments to panel members discussion. Avoid placing others in the opposing panel is the most important thing. Rather than that, discuss the topic objectively without being emotional. |
TYPES OF FORUM
|
HOW DO WE PLAN OUR FORUM?
At the beginning of the process, the team leader asked each of our team members to find out a topic suitable for the forum. When everyone found their own topic, the leader requested to hold a meeting and discuss which topic is more appropriate. We discussed it for about 40 minutes. First and foremost, we discussed related topics such as healthy lifestyle, covid-19 outbreak, vaccination, and so on. After a round of heated debate, we unanimously decided that covid-19 outbreak and vaccination should be the topics of our forum, so we will discuss two different topics within two rounds in the forum. After a while, a team member worried that the two topics could not be discussed within 15 minutes, so she suggested to discuss only one topic. After collecting everyone’s opinions, the leader agreed with the team member and decided to discuss only one topic which is covid-19 outbreak during the forum.
The chairman has been selected through voluntary process. Our team leader, Chuah Kai Sheng, volunteered himself to become the chairman. All of us agreed on this decision because everyone thinks that he is very suitable to become the chairman for our forum. For the reasons, the way he talks is very fluent, confident, and powerful. Plus, Kai Sheng possesses leadership inside himself. The opinions and ideas that came out from him are came in handy. Furthermore, he also guided other members and invited everyone to give out their opinions. On account of this, nobody was quiet and silent during the discussion, everyone was active in joining the discuss session. After the chairman has been selected, the rest of us were to choose the panelists order. As a result, our group have one chairman and five panels in total. We felt grateful as Kai Sheng played his role to lead our group to become more successful. Everyone gave cooperation along the discussion even we have not started our forum recording.
We have also decided the platform that will be used for recording purpose during our discussion. We planned to use ‘Zoom’ as the platform to record our forum. This is because everyone of us is more familiar with its function, such as recording, renaming, sharing slides and so on. Although it has a time limitation, this is not a big problem that we should worry about as our forum will be runned along only 15 minutes which is definitely within the time range. After deciding the platform used for recording our forum, we moved on to set the recording date. This is extremely important as everyone must participate in the forum recording. Therefore, we tried to accommodate each other and finally, we set a date at 23rd of April which is on Friday. To avoid procrastination, we planned to do it as early as our normal school day routine, which is at 9 a.m. Besides, we planned to have a trial before the real recording to kickstart everyone’s mind and spirit.

SCRIPT FOR THE FORUM
Chairman: A very good day to all, welcome to the forum titled “The Consequences of the Covid- 19 Outbreak”.
Chairman: Malaysia has implemented the Control Movement order on 18 of March 2020 due to the drastic increase of Covid-19 patients. Recently, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong even proclaimed an emergency in order to curb the current scenario. Thus, it is undeniable that Covid-19 has totally changed our lifestyle from various aspects.
Chairman: Before we begin our forum today, do allow me to introduce our panelists, First we have Ms Carmen, Ms Jing Lin, Miss Cecelia, Miss Fatin and last but not least we have Miss Zi Qing to be with us today deeply investigating pertaining to the consequences and challenges brought by the corona virus disease.
Chairman: As for our forum today, we would like to discuss the impacts of covid-19. Ms, Carmen, in your opinion, how does Covid-19 affect our life in the sense of the healthcare system ?
First Pannellist: Thank you Mr Chairman. According to MRFR analysis, the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to pose a huge impact on the overall healthcare industry. Governments and various associations in conjunction with several market players are actively participating in facing the current crisis. The key players are involved in research and development activities, strategic collaborations & partnerships, and new product launches, to cater to the current needs of vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, and medical devices such as ventilators. The COVID-19 outbreak has severely impacted the entire supply chain in the healthcare industry from the procurement of raw materials to production and distribution. The need for medical ventilators at a global level has triggered the manufacturers to increase production by up to 40% to 50%. The manufacturers have also collaborated with automakers to meet the growing demand. That’s all from me and I now pass the floor to the chairman.
Chairman: Thank you Ms. Carmen. Next, let us move on to our second panelist, Ms. Jing Lin. Hi Ms Jing Lin, in your point of view, what else is also impacted by Covid-19?
Second Panellist: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. The Covid-19 pandemic has actually deeply impacted the tertiary education sector in Malaysia as well. To stay afloat, most of the private universities and colleges can only depend on collecting student fees. However, due to the economic impact which has also resulted from the pandemic, some parents might not be able to afford the fees for their children. Besides, our government controls the enrolment of foreign students to local schools in order to avoid risks of imported Covid-19 cases but this action has affected the institutions’ cash flow. Non-essential programmes or plans for upgrading facilities are forced to be cancelled or postponed. Apart from that, a lot of universities and colleges were compelled to apply online teaching and learning mode instead of normal physical classes. However, there are several challenges due to this change. Firstly, the quality of teaching and interaction between students would be affected. Moreover, students might only have limited applications, or might lack technological infrastructures and internet access. Those who live in rural areas probably cannot enjoy good internet access. Compared to those who live in urban areas, they are definitely harder to follow up their lessons. Furthermore, risks of cheating are high when all examinations are conducted via online. Plus, university administrators have to rearrange the schedules for students as well. We can actually observe these impacts even till now.
Chairman: So if I could ask your opinion, our government is undergoing the vaccination program to achieve immunity among the community. We could observe that our why are people trying to avoid getting vaccinated?
Second Panellist: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. It’s a very good question. In fact, vaccination actually benefits us by providing immunity to us in order to protect us and also people around us, from the virus. However, it goes without saying that some might try to avoid getting vaccinated. In my opinion, most of them are trying to do so because they have big safety concerns regarding the vaccination. This is because there is a lot of information widely spread through social media or word of mouth. They feel scared of the side effects of the vaccination and worry about its safety. Furthermore, they might desire for further or additional details regarding the vaccination as sometimes, they might not receive sufficient information such as the associated risks and advantages. However, as a reminder here, it is crucial to get vaccinated currently to reduce the spread of the pandemic as soon as possible. People can obtain further information and instructions from relevant authorities and websites. That’s all from me, I’ll pass the floor back to Mr. Chairman.
Chairman: Thank you so much for the insightful sharing Ms. Jing Lin, I am pretty sure that our audience have a precise view on why people nowadays are trying to avoid getting vaccinated. Next, we would like to have Ms. Cecelia to share more with us in regards to the consequences of covid-19.
Third Panellist: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the environment in Malaysia. It is a worldwide disaster utterly unique to us, and no one is beneficial to the Covid pandemic. However, after the lockdown or MCO started to carry out. The reports of fresh air and fewer emissions have emerged as countries have introduced lockdowns and physical distancing steps. For example, the number of stations that reported “good” air quality increased from 28% to 57% in Malaysia after MCO. Industrial production had stopped releasing harmful materials like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur oxide, etc., for almost three months. Not only this, the water quality in Klang River, Malaysia, had improved. The minimum of human movement and lack of business operation is causing the Klang River clearer and less waste. Besides, SMG staff who take care of cleaning the Klang River have carried out regular cleaning operations. To sum up, Malaysia’s environment has improved due to the Covid pandemic, and MCO allows the planet to have time to recover from the mistakes we made to the environment before. That’s all for me. Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
Chairman: Thank you Ms. Cecelia for the informative sharing session. Not only the negative impacts, the outbreak of Covid-19 does bring us some blessing. Next, we would have our fourth panelist, Ms. Fatin to enlighten us even more on our main issue today. Let us welcome Ms. Fatin.
Fourth Panellist: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. We know, in fact, that covid-19 had a very significant impact for every person. But, for me, the very sad effect or consequences of covid-19 we go through is when the movement of people is limited. Everyone is not allowed across the state except for some factors such as work matters. Other than that, there is no excuse for the people to be able to cross the state. Several festive seasons have already passed in our country, and people are unable to return to their hometown during holidays such as Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and Deepavali. Furthermore, there are elderly parents who keep waiting for their children to return to their hometown every day. Plus, the saddest part is when the children are unable to see their sick parents in the village. This is very heartbreaking.
Chairman: Thank you Ms. Fatin. I couldn't agree more that everyone hopes that everything will get better very soon so that we can go back to our normal life. Well Ms. Fatin, if you would like to enlighten us on some initiatives on how we are able to encourage our citizens to register for vaccination?
Fourth Panellist: Ouh such a good question, Mr. Chuah. We know that vaccination will help to reduce the virus's transmission rate. However, some people refuse to take the vaccine because they do not believe in it or are not confident in its effectiveness. As a result, one of the initiatives that can be implemented to encourage all people to take the vaccine is to advertise the vaccine's benefits on all platforms, especially social media, so that everyone is informed. Anyone who has already received the vaccine should provide updates on how their health status changed since receiving the vaccine. In that way, everybody will always be prepared to take the vaccine and they will start to believe in it. I am very sure that this initiative will definitely open the eyes of the citizens especially who are from the anti-vax group to register for the vaccination. That’s all from me. We return to Mr. Chairman.
Chairman: Thank you so much Ms. Fatin. Lastly, let us welcome Ms. Zi Qing to further address our topic today.
Fifth Panellist: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Covid-19 is not only a global pandemic and public health crisis, it also affected the global economy. A rise in unemployment, reductions in income, business closures, disruption in manufacturing, tourism and other industries. These are the impact on the economy due to covid-19. Many people lose their job and income, this will affect their purchasing power, they will reduce their money spending. When demand is less than supply, this will directly affect the economy of our country. Besides that, many businesses and industries are not able to operate during covid-19, this causes a huge loss in their business, they are not able to pay liabilities to contractors and salary to employees. Because of this, many businesses and industries choose to close their business. Besides that, the tourism industry is one of the industries that can bring huge profits to our country. Because of covid-19, people are not allowed to travel and this brings a huge impact on the tourism industry. Most of the tourism industry faces financial loss and they have lost their income and this causes them to end up their business. So, the income of our country has decreased and this will affect our economy. That’s all for me, I’ll pass the floor back to Mr. Chairman.Thank you.
Chairman: Based on Ms. Zi Qing, there is no doubt that covid-19 affects the most in terms of business and commercial transaction.Thank you so much Ms. Zi Qing for the sharing session just now, I am pretty sure our audiences will benefit a lot from your talk just now.
Chairman: To sum up, we could observe that covid-19 does not merely bring changes in terms of economic, education but surprisingly it actually reduces the pollution to our environment as mentioned by Ms. Cecelia earlier. Hence, it is very vital for us in continuing to obey the SOP outlined by our government. Due to the time constraint, that’s all for our forum today and we hope that our audiences have gained some valuable insights from our panelists. Once again, thank you so much to all the panelists. Till we meet again, Bye!

REFLECTION ON THE FORUM DEMONSTRATION
Frankly speaking, the forum is totally new to most of our teammates as we never involve in such forum discussion. This is our first time conducting a 15 minutes forum on our own initiative.
Undeniable, it was an excellent experience for all of us. When we were first assigned to conduct a forum as part of our assessment, we were quite anxious as we had never been exposed to the skills and fundamental requirements needed for a forum.
Nevertheless, our great teamwork could be seen when we started distributing the job scopes among ourselves. All of us are proactive, as we always lend a helping hand to each other without neglecting anyone.
Eventually, all of us had gained a lot of valuable insights from the topic discussed. As we were touching on the issue of the outbreak of Covid-19, it created an opportunity for us to know more about the current issue happening globally. We not only understand the consequences brought by the pandemic, but then we are able to think critically pertaining to how actually the breakout of Covid-19 converse our life in terms of economics, education and many more. Apart from that, forum discussion enables us to exchange opinions on a particular issue, and we learn to see things from different perspectives as well as different dimensions.
Not only that, we gained a treasured friendship when we conduct our forum. From the beginning to plan the forum until our work's success, we have discussed and given a lot of ideas towards it. Our panellists are friendly and willing to help each other when each of us faces problems or difficulties. We even conduct a rehearsal of the forum to ensure everyone is well prepared. It helps us identify our mistakes and gives us an opportunity to increase the bonding among each other before conducting the actual forum.
After the demonstration of the forum, we are satisfied with the outcomes as it was our very first forum. We could say that it is totally a new skill for us to be developed in the future. However, there are few aspects that we are looking for better improvements. For instance, we may carry out our forum in a more interactive manner to ensure a more engaging forum session. Other than that, we may improve our pronunciation in speaking so that we can talk fluently in the forum. A good accent can help us reduce mistakes and avoid misunderstanding of meaning to other panellists.
To sum up, a forum is not merely public speaking as it requires more responsive, interactive, and two way communications. It was indeed an incredible experience for all of us as we learned to work in a team without any prejudices. It not only sharpens our oral skills but enhances our' people skills' when we, as a team, work together for a successful project. Last but not least, we would like to express our utmost gratitude to our lecturer, Madam Aida, for the guidance and moral support along the way. We truly appreciate it and look forward to learning even more from you.
