Topic for Persuasive Speech: Should Smoking in Public Places Be banned?
Persuasive Speech
Good morning, madam and everyone. My name is Foong Carmen. Today, I want to discuss the topic about should people smoking in public places be banned?
Nowadays, when will the government realize that public smoking is toxic to public health? Exposure to fumes can be just as unhealthy for a non-smoker as it is for the smoker. Smoking should be banned in public places because people are exposed to hazardous smoke in many places, a ban can lead to prevention and quitting of smoking. Moreover, second-hand smoke also can cause the health problem of people.
Smoking is one of the leading killers in North America and innocent people shouldn’t die because of it. For years people have been smoking in public places thinking it is my body, I can do whatever I want to it, but now that it has been proven that smoking not only harms the smoker, but also those around him or her, they should not be allowed to smoke. Therefore, smoking should be banned in public places. In public places, smoking should unquestionably be prohibited. Although the places that do allow smoking may lose some money, but it will also help with the health issues that arise. Most people believe that if they are not in a smoking area of a public place, they will not be affected by the smoke, but smoke can spread in a room and affect those around them. Smoking causes a slew of issues not only for the smoker, but also for those around him or her. If someone organized a protest to urge people to stop smoking in public, I am sure every non-smoker would agree.
In fact, the cloud of smoke bothers other people, especially non-smokers. Consider sitting in a restaurant and being unable to enjoy your meal due to smoke from a neighbours’ table. It should be prohibited because the percentage of non-smokers is higher than the percentage of active smokers, so non-smokers have a right to clean air, and second-hand smoke is more dangerous than smoking itself.
Reasons why smoking should be banned in public places. This is because tobacco is one of the most widely used drugs in the world, mainly in the form of cigarettes. Are you tired of seeing cigarette smokers at every public places? The government is banning all smoking from public places and most office buildings have banned. While I agree that we need.
Another reason is that smoking will become a habit, attracting many young people to do so. According to some credible surveys, the number of smokers is rapidly increasing these days. Of course, we can smoke if it will have no effect on anyone. If we do not want to have any negative effects on future generations, we must all work together to impose stricter regulations on smokers.
Furthermore, according to published research, an estimated 1,323 Americans die each day from a smoking related illness. Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the US (Bilofsky, 1). Smokers only make up approximately 26% of the US population, but those 26% affect all of us. A number of diseases can be caught from second-hand smoke, or passive. Of course second-hand smoke is harmful, just like smoking is. I really feel that smoking in public places should be banned because not only is it harming the health of smokers, but also the health of others around them. In my opinion, smoking in public places, especially places with a lot of people are a pretty selfish thing to do. I find that second-hand smoke is very annoying because every time I walk past someone smoking, I always feel that I have to hold my breath. Smoking seriously harms people’s lungs.
Although people say that smoking is the smoker’s choice… it is not... it is in some ways but not in all. It is their choice whether they want to pay to die, but our choice whether we want them to able to smoke around us, it is not just harming them when they smoke it is also harming us. By smoking in public places all the people that go to those places have got to inhale their smoke although they have a made a choice to not smoke, they don’t have a say in whether smoking will be a part in our life or not. BUT if it was banned smokers could smoke in their home and cars, and harm themselves and not others.
Additionally, smoking needs to be banned because of people with asthma can’t or barley breath when smoke is around. Also, in places like Disneyland, there is a few “smoke-zones” but even so, if you walk pass them you can still inhale the smoke that they are smoking. Then, it will bad for our health. Non-smokers should not have to suffer from the very poor choices of smokers. Non-smokers who come across smokers “Lighting up a ciggy” suffer as badly as the smokers do. I don’t think it is right that ANY of the non-smokers have to suffer, smokers only think about themselves not the people around them which sickens me and I think it is about time that non-smokers got a little justice. I don’t care about the smokers, all I care about are the people who don’t smoke who have to suffer.
In my opinion, smoking should be banned in public places. That is because non-smokers should not be forced to second-hand smoke against their will. Even though it is an obvious etiquette not to smoke when surrounded by many people, a large number of smokers don’t seem to care so much about it. For example, it’s not that hard to find a person smoking at a bus stop even if there are little girls around him/her. There should be rules restricting people who have little regard for the well-being of others. Another reason why smoking should be banned in public places is because of the garbage problem. Not many smokers throw away their cigarette butts into the trash cans. Most of them just toss it on the streets. The streets will be much cleaner if smoking is banned. However, smokers should not be treated unfairly. There should be more places where only smokers can smoke freely. Therefore, smoking should be banned in public places but more smoking areas should be built as well.
Smoking is a practice in which a substance, most commonly tobacco or cannabis, is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. The most common method of smoking today is through cigarettes, primarily industrially manufactured but also hand-rolled from loose tobacco and rolling paper. Today we are more aware about how bad smoking is for our health.
Thank you for listening my speech. I have done my sharing today, stay safe and hope everyone have a nice day.

Today is the first day of curricular activities and it is the last semester for curriculum activities. Like last semester, madam will ask us some questions about "how this semester is going", "whether we are healthy or not", and so on. At the same time, she will share the QR code to scan the attendance for us. After that, my wife asked Michelle, the president of last semester, to vote for our job selection this semester. For those of us who didn't have a position in the previous semester, we were very enthusiastic to participate.
When Michelle prepared the voting nomination form for us, madam asked us to read the slides of KLK and asked if we wanted to organize a KLK event. KLK is an activity that benefits the community and acquires knowledge. However, after voting through Google Forms, most of our classmates are not interested in organizing KLK activities. So we decided not to go to KLK this semester. After we discussed KLK's activities, Michelle finally finished her nomination form and we started to nominate our classmates. However, only a few people nominated themselves, and some of them especially wanted a role. Most importantly, no one wants to be the president and vice president. This makes the nomination process lengthy. After about 30 to 40 minutes, we finally have a new list of executive committees for this semester.
After the nomination, we finally carry out the last agenda for today and plan the activity for our last class. We can go out for lunch with our classmates, which is very exciting. Most of us offer ideas in WhatApps groups such as picnics, movie days, music chairs, etc., which are very attractive and interesting. The process of putting forward ideas and discussing has increased our contact and relationship. After a few minutes, we finally decided on the activity of the last class, that is, having lunch together. I feel excited at the thought of getting together because I have never seen my classmates before.

Today is our second classes of public speaking. Madam asked about our physical condition and recent situation as usual. After that, madam open the QR code for us to scan the attendance. She began to introduce the syllabus and tasks of this semester to us including planning an activity, writing the reflection, recording a persuasive speech, attending an activity, and telling us the importance of taking courses. In addition, madam asked us to continue to use Weebly to submit tasks and group with our former teammates. Next, madam taught us what a persuasive speech is and assigned us to a lounge to be with our teammates. In the breakout session, our team leader asked us to watch three videos that madam asked us to watch and create a mind map. So, after watching the video, our leader assigned us tasks so that everyone knew what to do. About 20 minutes later, we received a notice that the branch venue was coming to an end and we were transferred back to the Webex room.
Madam asked us to share persuasive speeches from Group 1 to Group 9. During the time of sharing, each leader provided their group discussions and experiences, which were rich in content and knowledgeable. I learned that we need to do extra preparation before giving a persuasive speech and the difference between persuasive speech and other speeches. After we finished the sharing, madam asked us to think of a topic for our persuasive speech and write our topic into Google Docs, so that no one would overlap with our topic.

Today, the class starts at 12.30pm as usual and madam asked about our recent situation. At the same time, it was the first class back to Uum. Madam shared many interesting about campus stories and daily life with us and suggested that we should get along well with our roommates and tolerate each other. I think it's good. It helps us to know more about the campus, go to the gym for sports and eat delicious food in other dormitories. Besides that, madam told us to explore the campus slowly because there are really many interesting places! !
After that, madam started our course today and divided us into different groups according to our own group. She assigned different groups to read different articles she published on OL. I belong to the fourth group, so we are responsible for the article entitled "Types of Persuasive Speech". In the breakout session, we browsed this article and caught some key points in it. We have decided to let a person give a demonstration in class later. After the breakout session, we were all invited back to the main room for a demonstration. The madam expressed her opinion on every representative of different groups. From the introduction of other students, we can better understand the topics given by madam to us today such as theories of persuasion, ethos, lagos and pathos, persuasive techniques, as well as the types of speech.
Lastly, madam gave us another task, that is, to analyze President Joko Widodo speech. Madam assigned us to the breakout session again, we discussed and assigned tasks in the group discussion. Finally, we successfully completed the task within the specified time.

Madam shared the QR code as usual, and then chatted with us. After that, we will begin today‘s first activity, that is, to deliver a speech by President Joko Widodo. This is last week's homework. Each group took turns to provide their opinions and opinions on this speech. From the speech, I learned to analyze the speech from different perspectives, and I also learned to connect the speech with real-life examples. Next, in the speech, I learned that repetition of the same word can emphasize his purpose or goal, while the word "we" can make the audience accept what the speaker needs to deliver. After each group gave a speech on behalf of President Joko Widodo. Madam has arranged the second activity for us today. I never thought that public speaking could be as interesting as translating Aidilfitri's songs into English. This activity requires us to use proper English for translation, and don't escape the meaning of lyrics, which is very challenging and daunting for us. Our group chose Selamat Hari Raya sung by Saloma. Although many people translate the lyrics directly, we still choose and how to sing this song along with the rhythm. This activity allows all the group members to turn on their microphones and sing. Although our group sang each other's songs, we worked hard to finish it. Everyone had a good time. Before you know it, this class has come to the end. I can't wait for the next class!

Today is our fifth co-curriculum activity! As usual, madam showed us the QR code and asked about our physical condition while talking to us. Next, madam gave us a task to briefly introduce a movie or novel to persuade our classmates to watch it.
Our group has some ideas about the choice of movies such as UP, Spiderman: No way home, and so on. After some discussion, we finally chose a movie that we wanted to convince, that is, Spiderman: No way home. We found that we can learn three lessons from Spiderman, that is, there is no way to go home to share with our classmates, revenge is never the answer, saving bad people means saving lives, and great power means great responsibility. Besides that, in this movie, Peter Parker's identity is revealed, and the plot of three generations of Spiderman sharing the same frame is also exciting.
After 1 hour discussion, madam transferred us to a Webex room, and each group started their speeches, persuading us to watch the movies they recommended such as Upin & Ipin, Godfather, and others. movie. Each group showed their enthusiasm to persuade us to see the film. Our group was given a speech by Cecelia. At first, she was very nervous because she was afraid of not performing well in public speaking. Madam stopped her speech and suggested that she should speak in a tone and share some pictures with her classmates, so that the students would know what the movie you want to share is.
Due to time constraints, there are still some group members who can't attend today. Therefore, madam put off their demonstration until next week and our class is over.

Today is our last second class activity! As usual, madam showed us the QR code and asked about our physical condition while talking to us. Next, madam asked us to continue sharing the unfinished movie recommendations from last week, starting from Group 6 to Group 9.
After sharing, madam began to discuss the activities of the last class with us such as watching movies, parties, playing games and so on. Therefore, our chairman came out to lead us in the discussion. Each of our groups needs to contribute to the activity, so that the activity will be successful and full of memories. Our president assigned us different tasks such as preparing meals, safety, technical, activities and so on. Each group has its own task on the day of the activity to ensure the smooth progress of the activity. In addition, we also discussed the location, activities and meals of the farewell event. During the whole discussion, I was surprised by the president's leadership ability in dealing with classmates' discussions. No matter how many questions or ideas our classmate throws, he can still listen to everyone's opinions and respect everyone's ideas. Therefore, I respect him very much, and I am honored to feel happy that he is our president.

Time flies, today is our farewell party! The farewell party was held in TM Hall, and I finally met everyone. During the day, I went to TM Hall with Zi Qing and Jing Lin in the same group. In my opinion, the party went well and we enjoyed our time together. But the students who prepared the spaghetti made a mistake, so the spaghetti was served a little later than other foods. However, this does not affect future activities. We have no blame because we know the situation. I suggest that the solution to this problem is to prepare spaghetti two hours in advance and bring it 10 minutes before the party starts. This not only ensures that everyone has tasted spaghetti, but also can enjoy it with other foods.
After enjoying the food, we started the game. We played first impressions and now you know me, the werewolf, and the musical chair. We are really happy and enjoy playing with our classmates. The games are very interesting, and we are very grateful to the activity department for its efforts in planning and executing these games.
After that, our monitor, Mr. Fazlil, gave a farewell speech to everyone. He was both professional and confident in his speech. I can feel his leadership as president, and I should learn from him. I fully appreciate his speech and thank him for his time and efforts in serving as our monitor. I've learned that we should always cherish what we have now and appreciate the people and things around us. Next, my wife also made a final speech. She wishes us all the best and will always do well in the future. After all the meetings, we helped arrange the chairs at the back of the hall. I'm one of the people who made it happen. Everyone is very cooperative and helps each other to set up chairs. This speeds up the process of sorting out the hall, and we are satisfied with the result.
Finally, I am very happy that I attended today's farewell party, because I can finally meet my classmates and my wife. Everyone is nice and friendly! I believe all of us are uneasy, because this will be the first and last physical contact of our last class. After the farewell party, we all took a group photo as a souvenir. Although I may not have the opportunity to get everyone together in the future, I'm glad to meet everyone in my trip to co-curicular. Along the way, I really learned a lot from my wife, and I really appreciate all the knowledge she taught us. I won't forget that farewell party, I have an unforgettable memory. Thank you all! !
