Topic of the Persuasive Speech:
Embrace the Spirit of Volunteerism
Persuasive Speech:
Good day, Madam. My name is Chuah Kai Sheng, with the matric number of 280310. The topic of my persuasive speech is entitled, "Embrace the Spirit of Volunteerism." Gordon B. an American religious leader, once said: "One of the great ironies of life is this: he or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served." Volunteering has been acknowledged as a common activity in recent centuries. People are willing to volunteer themselves by donating their time without any expectation of return. Despite that, volunteering does not mean that we have to involve ourselves in a long-term commitment or occupy plenty of time from our busy schedule. Volunteering ourselves will not only offer vital help to people, animals, and organisations that are in need; this will also benefit us by improving our physical and mental health regardless of the ways we give in. We do volunteer to make a difference, but not for any personal gain. Personally, I am passionate about volunteerism, and until today I was one of the student volunteers at the Legal Aid Centre of Malaysia, where I shadowed the solicitor in providing legal advice and information to underprivileged and marginalised communities. The benefits of volunteering cover all aspects of social, emotional, and physical life, including connecting with the community, bringing fulfilment to our lives, and being good for our mind and body. Thus I hope, after hearing these benefits in depth, it may convince you to become an amazing volunteer in the future.
First and foremost, volunteering allows us to connect to the community even when we help out with a minor task. Being a volunteer allows us to meet new friends and broaden our network, which in turn enhances our social skills. This is a good opportunity to make new friends, especially when we are new to an area and want to build a new connection at the same time. It is also able to nourish existing relationships when people are committing to the same activity. This broadens our social network and enables us to expose people with similar interests. At the same time, we are able to improve our social skills, especially for those who are shy and introverted. This is a great opportunity to meet with a group of people who have a common passion. When we meet regularly with our friends, by doing volunteer work, we are able to create stronger bonds between each other and eventually make a better connection when we are working together. Other than making new friends, we can also strengthen the bond between us and our family or colleagues. If you would like to have a deeper connection with them, why not ask them to volunteer together? You might feel happier and live longer when doing good deeds with your family and colleagues. To conclude, a person should try out volunteering in order to connect with the community by making new friends and having a stronger bond with their family and friends.
Secondly, psychologists stated that volunteering can bring joy and fulfilment to your life. Through volunteering, we might be able to discover our true hobby and develop a passion for something that makes us interested. When we are doing something we are interested in, we will be devoted and filled with enjoyment. Why does volunteering bring fulfilment to our lives? This is because volunteering can make us think that we have plenty of time to spend. Research conducted by the Harvard Business Review stated that people who volunteer their time have a sense of feeling that they have more of it. According to the study's findings, volunteering our time makes us feel less time-constrained rather than wasting our time. In addition to that, doing volunteer work can be a relaxing and fun experience to explore our interests. It is a good option to escape from the everyday busy routine and also develop new skills. We may experience something new which we haven’t tried before, such as volunteering in a museum can extend our knowledge of the history, culture, or science from the displays or installations. It is sometimes easier to adapt skills and knowledge by practising in real life rather than learning theory from a book. We may also benefit the greater community by improving ourselves through the skills that we have acquired. Sometimes the skills we learn from volunteering can help us to advance our careers or apply to academic studies, which in turn enables us to outshine others. All in all, volunteering can definitely help to bring fulfilment to our lives because we get to have fun, develop new skills and use our time wisely. This can make our lives more meaningful.
Lastly, we should try out volunteering because it is good for our minds and bodies. People who volunteer themselves feel more socially engaged and thus avoid loneliness and depression. According to studies, volunteering 200 hours per year is associated with lower blood pressure, and volunteering at least 100 hours per year has a health benefit. As the volunteer walks around and demonstrates constant movement when helping out, the individual physical activities can be increased and therefore improve their cardiovascular health. For instance, interacting with the children at the orphanage and helping out at the nursing home will require you to move around more than sitting down. Recently, the founder and CEO of MovingWorlds.org reported that more than 68% of volunteers believe that volunteering can make them feel physically healthier. Moreover, 73% of them also think that volunteering has reduced their stress levels. Additionally, volunteering is not only good for our physical health but also our minds. It can help to combat depression. This is because connecting and having regular contact with others can protect us against depression. The risk of depression can be reduced when we are always involved with a group of people, as we will not feel isolated by others and we can also share our minds with them at the same time. A sense of accomplishment can be gained when we are doing something for others. This can indirectly boost our confidence and self-esteem to make us become a positive person. Other than that, stress can be relieved when we participate in volunteering activities. Activities such as spending time with pets can relieve stress and anxiety. When we are doing volunteer work that can relax our mood, the level of stress can also be reduced. Thus, volunteering is beneficial to our mind and body because it helps to improve our physical and mental health effectively.
To conclude my speech, volunteering can bring the benefits of connecting with the community, bringing fulfilment to our lives, and is good for our mind and body. If you are hoping to change your life and the lives of others, you can try to attend any charity event or non-profit organisation in your community. Embrace the spirit and benefits of volunteering and join in!
Thank you.

Classes Reflection
16th April 2022
Today marks the final semester of the public speaking class for my kok. As usual, Madam Noor Aida displayed the QR code on the screen and let us scan our attendance. Considering some of the classmates are using the mobile device to attend class, Madam is always more than happy to add them manually to ease those students who only have a single device for study purposes. Madam also emphasises that the attendance for kok is no less important as it is part of our assessment that carries certain weight to our overall grades. This also trains us to attend classes on time and keep up the habit of punctuality.
The class started off with the election of new committees for our class. Madam asked us to nominate and note our desired candidates by opening a spreadsheet. In order to give everyone a chance to be part of the committee, Madam also set a rule that students who had been on the committee for the past semester were not allowed to be nominated again as the new committee. I think this is really fair and just as everyone will have an opportunity to be on the committee and enhance their leadership skills. Madam also asked us to read through the KLK Programme slides she sent in the Whatsapp group, and we have to discuss whether or not to conduct a particular event in accordance with the KLK Programme as it is not necessary. After the voting session, the whole class had come to a consensus that we were not going to conduct the programme. Madam also agreed with our final decision. From the discussion and the voting, I have observed that everyone's opinion should be taken into consideration, and the majority rule is important when people have different opinions.
We started the voting session right after the nomination of the new committee was closed, and the list of committees was formed immediately. For those who have been selected, they are required to fill in our personal information in the spreadsheet for documentation purposes provided by our new President. Madam also asked us to brainstorm on certain activities to be conducted during our subsequent class. I am very excited to learn more from Madam, particularly about the art of public speaking.

23th April 2022
When I was entering the class, Madam Noor Aida had already shared with us the QR code. Madam is kind and considerate enough as she always started the class earlier to give us sufficient time to scan our attendance. Madam started off the lovely morning by explaining to us our syllabus for the semester. As with the previous semester, we are required to add a new partition to our Weebly website for the A212 semester. We also need to write our weekly reflection after each public speaking class!
The main learning theme of the class today was persuasive speech. Madam has uploaded various materials to our online learning, including articles and videos, for our ease of reference. I gained a deeper understanding of the effective ways to organise our speech and the useful tips and tricks in convincing our audience. From those materials, I realised that giving a speech is not a simple thing, it requires full preparation. It can be from the choice of topic, to laying out our speech, to the style we opt to deliver our speech.
Subsequently, Madam opened the breakout rooms in Webex and we were required to get into our own groups to discuss and come up with a mind map to summarise the contents based on the materials provided. I believe Madam’s intention is to enhance communication among the students and provide them with the opportunity to express their own opinions and train us to work as a team. To get our group spirit going, I suggested that each of us take charge of one video or article, and then summarise the contents in a Canva poster. I am extremely grateful as my group mates will always devote themselves to the group work and give full cooperation. Thus, our group managed to produce a nice and interesting poster that summarises the main points from the materials given. After 30 minutes, all groups returned to the main room and needed to present based on the poster produced. I have presented on behalf of our group, and I am happy to receive positive feedback from Madam. We also managed to listen to the insights from other groups, and I was really amazed by some of the classmates' excellent presentation skills, which I should learn from them. Madam ended the class by reminding us to think of the topic for our persuasive speech, and I got to start my preparation soon!

Today was the first day I had an online public speaking class on campus. In order to make us feel less homesick and more familiar with the campus, Madam Noor Aida shared with us the environment and certain valuable experiences she had had at UUM. Madam also advises us to interact well with our roommates, besides giving moral support to all of us. Personally, I think this is really good as I believe campus life might be strange to most of us who have been studying online for the past few semesters! I am eternally grateful for Madam’s warm care, which makes me feel at home.
Subsequently, we were divided into breakout rooms based on our groups. During the breakout room discussion, our group had read and discussed the topic assigned by Madam, entitled "Types of Persuasive Speech." We discussed the main argument put forward by the author and determined who would be the presenter on behalf of our group. From our discussion, we learned that persuasive speech can be classified into three types: propositions of fact, propositions of value, and propositions of policy. As usual, Madam provided each group with substantial feedback via the chatbox throughout the presentation session. Later, we went into the respective breakout rooms again for our last task of the day, which was to analyse Joko Widodo's speech. We are required to study the speech in terms of the technique and strategies used, the audience, time, place, motives, and signals, as well as the speech's impact on the audience. I think this kind of activity is very helpful because it will give us a more hands-on chance to learn about persuasive speech strategies and how to give them in a more convincing way.

After the scanning of attendance, we continued our class by listening to the group presentation pertaining to the analysis of Joko Widodo's speech. Every group had a different take on the speech and provided valuable insights from their own discussions. Overall, Madam was very satisfied with the presentation from all the groups. She also commended all of us for being so meticulous in analysing the speech.
Moving on, Madam told us that we needed to translate a Hari Raya song into an English version. What we need to do is to substitute the song lyrics with suitable terms and phrases. Translation work is nothing new to me, as I used to translate cause papers during my internship. Despite that, translating a song would definitely be a huge challenge for me. After the discussion with my groupmate, we chose the song "Selamat Hari Raya" by Saloma. A million thanks to my groupmates. We were able to translate a whole song into the English version. Nonetheless, when we were typing to sing it out, we tended to lose the melody and were unable to keep up the tempo due to the new version of the lyrics. Anyway, we still had a lot of fun throughout this session! We also had the opportunity to hear our talented classmates' translated versions of Hari Raya Song!

It was an interesting class today. Madam encouraged the class to brainstorm the activities to be performed in public speaking classes. Every group had chosen a movie, and the task was to persuade the others to watch the selected movie. We chose the movie "Spider-Man: No Way Home." A group member of mine contributed points and opinions, and then we shared our views and constructed the persuasive points on a Google Doc.
Our group representatives took turns presenting orally. They laid out the points that would attract us to watch the movie they chose. After every group's presentation, a classmate will be randomly selected by the Madam to ask for his opinion and views on the points presented. This session allowed me to witness the method of analysing a movie and, most importantly, the persuasive techniques. It is important to learn how to persuade well because we can have a positive effect on society.

The day was indeed sad as Madam announced that today was the second to last public speaking class. That is to say, we will not have any public speaking classes for the subsequent semester. The lessons continued from the previous class session, in which each group was required to persuade our classmates to watch a particular movie or novel by explaining the rationale behind it. In ensuring the engagement of all To ensure a more engaging session, Madam randomly picked students to share their thoughts and views on the presenter’s style of presentation, which is very beneficial for all.
The next session was the discussion on our last assessment, which was organising our own event. Madame has given us sole discretion in discussing how we are going to plan the event. During that conversation, everyone had the chance to state their opinions. Considering the majority opinion, our class had decided to organise a farewell gathering, and the work was distributed equally among all the groups by using the spin wheel. Every group was happy with the outcomes and willing to help. It is undeniable that our president's leadership and serenity during the discussion astonished me and he had set a role model for us to be followed.

Never think of today as marking the last day of my public speaking class with my peeps from Group E. Although this is the first time our classmates met each other in person, many happy memories have been made today that I will keep forever! As planned during the last class, each group had prepared different food for the potluck purpose. At 12.30pm, all of our classmates had gathered at the TM Hall. Our classmates had been performing their duty based on the job scopes distributed in the previous discussion. In our group, we had prepared puddings for everyone because no one dislikes desserts!
Overall, the whole event flow went on quite smoothly. If I were to be picky, the food prepared was in fact insufficient for the total number of people who were attending the gathering. Nonetheless, everyone is still having a great time throughout the events as all of us are being considerate in sharing the food with each other. Next, the games conducted, such as the werewolf and musical chairs, were really interesting, and I firmly believe they have given me an opportunity to get to know our classmates and enhance our bonding!
A farewell speech was then delivered by Mr. Fazril, the president of our public speaking class. While he was delivering a speech in front of the crowd, I could sense his leadership and presidential skills. I wholeheartedly agree with his points and appreciate his efforts as president. I also realised the importance of being thankful for the people and resources in my immediate environment. The session was capped by the lovely farewell speech from our beloved Madam. In her speech, she mentioned she was certain we would all succeed in the future. I took away from our wonderful Madam's speech the reminder to treasure and put to use the public-speaking skills we've developed along the way, no matter the field of work we choose in the future.
As my group was in charge of the technical aspect, I assisted with the PA system when certain glitches occurred during the game. Thankfully, no major issues pertaining to the technical problems occurred during the event. I also helped with cleaning up the hall after the end of the event itself.
Finally, I would like to take this golden opportunity to thank all our classmates and Madam. I have learned so much from all of you, not only in terms of public speaking skills, but more of the positive attitude and mindset that brings values to life. I have acquired what I aimed for during the first class, and of course, I have gained beyond that for sure. Not forgetting our Madam, who never stops giving us support, motivation, and knowledge throughout our training. Till we meet again!
