Extreme Weight-loss Methods Should Be Avoided
Persuasive Speech
Good day everyone! My name is Wang Jing Lin. The topic for my persuasive speech today is “Extreme Weight-loss Methods Should Be Avoided”. A wrong weight loss plan can turn a diet into a disaster. Nowadays, there are many people who chose just any methods to lose their weights, even extreme weight-loss methods, without considering the consequences that might come after it. But do you know? If we are not using the correct methods, it will be very dangerous to our health. I would like to share with you some real-life examples of how extreme weight-loss methods constitute danger to us. According to Yorkshire Evening Post, an England-based medical student died from taking diet pills she bought on the Internet which contained an industrial chemical and herbicide that’s long been banned in the States due to its terrifying side effects. Now, you must have thought that eating nothing is the best way to lose weight. However, in Scotland, an Australian-born woman starved herself to death, according to her diary entries cited in a BBC report. Even people surrounding me, I have a friend who was addicted to weight-loss and did it in an extreme way but end up sending to hospital due to inappropriate weight-loss manner. Thus, it is important to choose appropriate weight-loss methods that are not harmful to our health and at the same time, we could lose our weight effectively. Now, I am going to discuss about what is the problem with the extreme weight-loss methods together with suitable examples, and its cause, as well as the correct solutions to replace the extreme methods.
First and foremost, we have to understand that there are problems with extreme weight-loss methods. People are too addicted to weight-loss, and they’d rather adopt extreme weight-loss methods just to lose their weight quickly. Normally, people would eat pills or tablets. However, extreme weight-loss methods bring a lot of disadvantages to us. According to a verified premier health information website namely Health24, there are a few the most extreme and dangerous weight-loss methods that has been discussed such as eating tapeworm tablets and arsenic diet pills. First, tapeworm tablets. According to reports in the said website, these eggs hatched in our system and stole our nutrients, causing us to lose weight. Tapeworm infestation is extremely dangerous and can result in serious consequences. The larvae of this parasite move through the blood vessels and can enter the eyes, brain, and spinal cord once infected. Headaches, seizures, paralysis, blindness, and, in some cases, death can result from this. Reported by Today.com, one woman in Iowa swallowed a beef tapeworm she purchased on the internet in order to lose weight, but luckily, she made it to her doctor in time to confess and receive treatment before it was too late. Secondly, arsenic diet pills. The pills could contain harmful ingredients like arsenic, a poisonous chemical element to human. Arsenic, like amphetamines, was promoted for its ability to speed up metabolism. When consumed through food or drinking water, it can cause health problems such as skin lesions and cancer, based on the World Health Organization. It’s not a substance we’d want in medication.
Now, let’s observe what is the main cause that led people in choosing extreme weight-loss methods. I would say this is probably due to the fact that people are pursuing beauty more than their health. Medically reviewed by Dr. Timothy Legg, a certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, it was found that, unfortunately, our culture’s pervasive message that a smaller body shape and size can make us happier, more attractive, and confident, thus leads many of us to romanticise the benefits of losing weight. People frequently believe that losing weight will magically change their lives. From here, it is thus inferred that most of them want to lose weight as fast as they could, no matter what method it is, in order to achieve the target that they are aiming for. Besides, people often get influenced and attracted by current markets which are selling different types of medicines or pills which are said to be effective and fast in terms of losing weight. For instance, according to Health24, as 1900s begins, the tapeworm tablets containing tapeworm eggs were already marketed to help people lose weight. Diet pills and weight-loss remedies were a lucrative industry in the 19th century, just as how they are today. The marketed items claim to help us lose weight, or at least to make it easier to lose weight. We can see that are causes to make people wanted or even addicted to lose weight in an incorrect way, but we must be aware that these don’t really can help us to lose weight, instead, it might cause harm to us. So, now, we need to know what we should do to replace.
Now, I will talk to you about the solution. To resolve the problems associated with extreme weight-loss methods, the most obvious way is to straight avoid them. That being said, we can definitely choose other methods to replace them and achieve the similar goal at the same time. As previously mentioned, our current society is trying to set a new standard of beauty on people, they want pretty faces and skinny body. Of course, I am not going to say what is right or what is wrong, but sometimes we may find that this is too materialistic. However, pursuing beauty by losing weight in order to keep our body fit is our own right. We definitely can do it without anyone obstructing us from doing so, but the point is as long as we do it in a right and reasonable manner. Now, medically reviewed by Daniel Bubnis, a certified personal trainer and medical advisor, one of the suggested ways to us is “eating mindfully”. Instead of eating something that is said could fasten our weight-loss process, it is smarter to adjust our own eating habits internally and it can help us to lose weight naturally. For instance, we should sit down to eat and avoid distractions while eating. We need to take time to chew and savour the food. This technique helps with weight loss, as it gives a person’s brain enough time to recognize the signals that they are full, which can help to prevent over-eating. We are also advised to choose food that are nourished with nutrients and will satisfy us for hours. Apart from that, rather than keep eating pills or tablets, we can just track our diet and exercise regularly. We need to be aware of what we do, what we eat and drink every day. A study from the PubMed Central shows that weight loss is positively correlated to the frequency of monitoring food intake and exercise. Besides, we can also consume plenty of fibres, manage our stress levels and always get a good night’s sleep to lose our weight naturally.
In conclusion, we know that choosing extreme weight-loss methods is not a great idea as it would cause harm to our health. There are in fact many more examples of extreme weight-loss methods apart from what I have mentioned above. We could simply find it via Google. Realising the impact, we must bear in mind that we should be mindful when choosing weight-loss methods, do it in a reasonable and safe way, such as adjusting our own eating habits, monitoring our food intake, exercising regularly and so on. Again, it is vital to choose right methods to lose weight. Nothing can be achieved via shortcuts; we need to find the right way. That marks the end of my speech, thank you.

Classes Reflection
16/4/2022
Today is the first public speaking class for my last semester taking KOK. Actually, today I am also representing UUM in an external mooting competition organised by Taylor's University namely "Taylor's Intervarsity Mooting Competition 2022". Fortunately, the time did not crash with each other. Even though feeling tired of joining the competition, but I still insist to attend my very first public class of this semester. So basically, we scan the QR code before the class starts, as usual. At this moment, Madam also reminds us that the attendance is important as it is one of the criterias in the assessment syllabus. In this regard, I realised that punctuality is vital so that we won't late to scan the code in order to record our attendance.
As the new semester begins, undoubtedly, we have to elect for the new batch of committees. After scanning the QR code, Madam starts asking us to open up a spreadsheet for nomination purpose. The rule for this is that people who have been part of the committees are not allowed to be nominated again. This is to give chances to others who did not join before. Personally, I totally agree with this system as it reflects fairness and just so that everyone is having an opportunity instead of merely particular persons. At the same time while our representative creating the spreadsheet link, Madam also asked us to read the slides about KLK programme which she has sent it into our WhatsApp grough yesterday. She mentioned that the programme is not compulsory to be conducted. After reading the slides, we need to express our opinion on whether want to carry out the KLK programme. We have a voting session for this vis google form. After collecting views from all, the statistic shows that majority of us opining that we would not conduct it. Madam also agrees with the final outcome. For this, there's also a value that can be learnt, which is, it is important to always collect opinions from all before making a major decision involving all classmates. I definitely can find this from our lovely Madam.
After the nomination done, we have a short voting session as well. Without any unwanted delay, we have came out the final list of committees smoothly. For those who have been selected, they are required to fill in our personal information in the spreadsheet provided by our new President. In the WhatsApp group, Madam also starts asking our opinions on the activities that could be carried out in our last face-to-face class later on. Many are active and provide their ideas in regard to this. So, basically, these are the agendas that we gone through today and Madam mentions that she would start briefing the syllabus on the next class and upload some relevant materials in OL before that.
I am ready and looking forward to learn new things in this semester, and I hope that with the things that I learn in this semester, I can improve myself more in speaking and oral skills, as well as enhance my confidence!

My second public speaking class with my lovely lecturer, Madam Noor Aida, began in a bright morning! When I arrived in class, I discovered Madam had already entered and had opened the QR code for us to scan. I can see Madam Noor Aida's responsibility and punctuality in action. And she's been a constant source of energy in our class! Today, Madam explains the syllabus to us. For now, we can start adding new partition in our existing Weebly website and write reflections for each and every public speaking class.
Today's learning topic is related to persuasive speech. From the materials including videos, articles, website and slide in OL, we are able to gain further understandings on this sort of speech, such as it's basic and general concept, the way to organise a persuasive speech, the techniques to persuade our audience, and so on. I understand that a persuasive speech is aiming to convince people on certain topics. Thus, a well-drafted speech and sufficient preparation are vital to deliver an excellent persuasive speech.
Madam have divided us into different breakout rooms, according to our own group, for us to discuss based the existing materials and come out with a summary of them. By doing so, we have got the chance to communicate and discuss with our group members, and I find it really efficient and effective while working with them. I think this is an extremely right decision to let us discussing in group. For our group, we distributed task, for example, 2 persons in charge for a video and summarise the contents in it. We decided to use Canva to create a creative and interesting mindmap for us to put the summarised information inside. This definitely ease the understandings of all on the materials given by Madam. After 30 minutes, we all have been invited back to the main room, and each group will need to send a representative to brief us on what we have discussed and the outcome and summary of the discussion. Everyone was giving briliant explanation and praised by Madam. While the particular person was speaking, Madam gave her constructive opinions in the chatbox. I feel that this is really an efficient way as it would not interupt the person talking concurrently.
After this, we are advised to have a thought on the topic of the persuasive speech that we are going to deliver and film it in video form. I have done some research in this regard, but I am still in the process of thinking. I appreciate the time given by Madam for us to think about our own topic. Can't wait to write my own persuasive speech and film it!
14/5/2022
Today is the first day I had my public speaking class in UUM campus. Considering most of us just entered the campus, Madam shared us some stories, experiences and funny things in UUM, advised us to be friendly to our roommates, gave us motivation and mental support knowing that we are busy and stressed out with our studies. I feel that this is good as it helps us to release stress and calm down ourselves since we just entered the campus and some might be having homesick or emotional. Madam is very kind and caring to us.
After that, Madam started our class today by dividing us into different breakout rooms according to our own group. She assigned different groups to read different articles that she has posted in OL. My group is Group 4, we were taking charge of the article titled "Types of Persuasive Speech". In the breakout room, we skimmed and scanned the article and grasped some important points contained in the passages. We have decided to let one person to present later in the class. After the breakout session ends, we all are invited back to the main room to have the presentation session. Madam has commented to each and every representative from different groups. Personally, I think that the comments are really constructive and useful to us. From the presentation by my classmates, I am also able to gain better understandings on the topics that are given to us today, such as theories of persuasion, ethos, lagos and pathos, persuasive techniques, as well as the types of speech.
Lastly, we have our last task which is group discussion of the Joko Widodo's speech. We are divided again into our breakout rooms respectively to have our time reading and understanding the speech. We are required to determine the technique and strategies used, the audience, time, place, motive and signals, as well as the speech's impact on the audience. From here, I found that apart from learning on how to produce a persuasive speech, it is important as well to know what technique and strategies that we will use, and what are the impacts arising out from our speech to the audience.
21/5/2022
As usual, Madam was very punctual and share the QR code for us to scan. Considering some might not be able to scan, Madam asked if anyone needs attendance manually added. From here, I learnt that we must be considerate towards others' difficulties just like what Madam did in this instance. After being greeted by Madam, she started our class by continuing the session in our previous class, which is the group presentation on Joko Widodo's speech. The groups that have not presented in the previous class are called to send a representative as well to present their group discussion and understandings on the speech. Madam was very satisfied with with all representatives' answers. She gave comments and feedback to them as well. Not only the constructive feedbacks are beneficial to the presenting groups, but also the other groups who are not presenting. We were able to learn from others, including the contents and the way they presented.
The next session for this public speaking class is singing a song. We are required to translate a Hari Raya song to an English version one, and amend the lyrics to make them fitting with the song music. When I first listen to this instruction, I felt hard and quite difficult as when it involves translation of languages, the lyrics needs to be shorten, lengthen, amended accordingly. We were later divided into a breakout room to choose a song and conduct the task. We chose the song titled "Selamat Hari Raya" by Saloma and translated it together. Even though it was quite tough, we managed to finish it and were ready to sing it out! Back to the main room, Madam started calling each group to 'present' the new version of song. We felt nervous, not only because of singing a new version of song, but also it was an online session! Online singing is definitely a new experience to all of us. However, in the end, we did it well and received good comments from Madam. It was fun!
Today's class was conducted in a fun and interative atmosphere with the activities carried out. But apart from entertainment and funny stuff, the most important and valuable thing that we were able to obtain is the knowledges and the experiences. By listening to our friends' presentations, we learnt from others' opinions and absorbed the knowledge behind. Besides, translating the lyrics was definitely a new experience that we would almost never experienced in our usual academic classes. I really appreciate these activities.
28/5/2022
Today's chapter was also fun and interesting. Madam had put effort in brainstorming what kind of activities that we could carry out in last few public speaking classes. Today's main session is about, every group chooses a movie, and persuades the other classmates to watch that movie with persuasive points, as well as reviews the persuasives technique used in the movie. After dividing into each breakout room, my group members and I have discussed which movie are we going to choose. Finally, we chose the movie namely "Spider-Man: No Way Home". One of my group members possessed deep understanding on this movie, and she raised out her points and opinions to us. Later, we opened up a Google Doc to write out the persuasive points together. At the same time, we shared our thoughts inside the Google Doc as well.
Back to the main room, as usual, we have our own group's representatives to take turn in giving oral presentations. Basically, they stated the points that would attract us to watch the movie they chose. I was extremely amazed with their oral skills and performances. After each and every representative's presentation, Madam randomly selected one of our classmates and asked for their opinions whether they agreed with the points. At the same time, we were able to gain more insights on the techniques that are used in each movie.
From the session, I was able to learn how they interpreted the movies' gists and caught the techniques applied by the movie makers to persuade audience. Referring to that, I wish that one day, I would be able to produce and present work which brings positive influence to our society, just like the movies.
4/6/2022
The different thing from usual is that, sadly, Madam announced that today was the second last public speaking class. Not only for this semester, but also for the whole co-corriculum subject. It is really unbelievable that four semesters past. No matter how, I appreciate what I've gone through and obtained all the way to here. Today, we continued the previous class' session, which is persuading classmates to watch a particular movie via a small speech introducing the movie and explaining the reasons. Group 5 took the floor and continued the presentation, followed by other groups subsequently. Madam was very satisfied with their performances. To ensure more engaging session and inquire for our thoughts, Madam picked one of us and asked whether agreed with what the presentor has said. An important lesson that I learnt from this session is that, if someone was initially not interested on a particular movie, but end up get persuaded by the explanation on that movie, and started showing interest, the presentor is considered a successful speaker who is good in his or her persuading skills or techniques.
The subsequent session after that is discussing on our last assessment, which is organising an event by our own. Madam passed the floor to the President of our class, to let him taking charge of the flow of discussion. During that discussion, it was subject to freedom of speech where everyone possessed the right to speak or voice our their opinions. Considering the opinions collected, the outcome of the discussion was that, we are going to organise a farewell event and we have also discussed the venue and time for the farewell. Besides, we have some jobscopes that need to be distributed to each group so that every group would be taking charge of one jobscope. My group is group 4 and we will be responsible for the technical jobs. The outcome was determined by using name picker wheel and it was sufficiently fair. Every group was also satisfied with the results and ready to assist the event flow. Throughout the discussion, I was amazed with the President's leadership and calmness while facing doubts or questions from others. This is also another personality that we should always learn and apply in our workplace in the near future.
11/6/2022
Today was the farewell day in Dewan TM! To organise this physical farewell event, we have utilised around an hour of our previous class to discuss the preparation and flow. After the discussion, we have discussed again within our own group to double confirm our jobscope and to ensure that everyone was on the same page as well. Since our class has decided to apply 'potluck' style for our farewell event, in which every group would need to contribute a dish of food to be shared to others, we need to decide what would we bring for our classmates. The outcome of our discussion was simple snacks, specifically, we have decided to buy Cocon puddings. One of our group members, Kai Sheng has volunteered himself to buy the puddings as he would go to a grocery store shortly. Each of us transferred RM4 to him for the puddings. We were delightful to have the puddings at hand and excited to bring for others to taste!
During the day, from what I observed, basically, everything went smooth and nothing major. We enjoyed the moment staying together with each other. But there was one, which is the spagetthi has been brought a little bit late than other food, due to some sudden situations. However, to be honest, this did not affect anything and we did not blame as we understood everyone's circumstances and must be considerate towards others. Thus, a simple way to resolve this issue is to reserve the spagetthi to the closing time, which is after all the sessions finished. This not only resolved the problem that we were about to start the games, but also could become an enjoyment at the closing time, instead of all main dishes have been finished at the beginning.
Next, speaking of the games, we all were really happy and enjoying the moment playing with the classmates. We played first impression and now you know me, werewolf, and musical chairs. They were fun! We really appreciate the effort of the activity department in planning and executing these.
After that, our public speaking class's President, Mr. Fazril gave a farewell speech to everyone. While he was standing in front of everyone and giving a speech, I could feel his leadershil and professionalism as a President which I should learn from him. I sincerely agree with what he delivered in his speech and appreciate the time and effort paid by him for being our President. I learnt that we should always appreciate the persons and the things that are surrounding us today. Besides, from his speech, I realise that he is respectful by addressing Madam and all of us when delivering his farewell speech. Next, Madam gave her final speech to us as well. She wished us all the best in the future, and would always do well for everything. From our lovely Madam's speech, I also learnt that we should always appreciate the knowledge that we gained along the journey in public speaking, and make use of it in the near future regardless of what career we would be in.
After all the sesssions ended, we all helped to arrange the chairs neatly at the back of the hall. I was one of the persons as well who contributed to this. I could observe everyone were cooperating, working toegther well, helping each other to arrange the chairs in order to reduce the burdens of each other. This definitely fastens the process of tidying up the hall. We were satisfied with the outcome.
Lastly, I want to say that, today was the first day Madam as well as the classmates physically met, and also the last day we have our public speaking class. I believe that all of us are feeling upset as we probably would not have any chance to gather again in the name of students from "Group E Public Speaking" class. The other group members from my group, Group 4 felt the same as me. We have included our feelings, and the lessons we learnt along this journey into our our group farewell speech. Each of us was taking charge of different parts, and we combined and finalised it to be one. We sincerely hope that anyone who reads the speech would have the same feeling as us.
We have to understand that all good things must come to an end. Nevertheless, we look forward to a better tomorrow together! Let's reunite one day! :)
